Bird Photography in Svalbard

Spring Workshop Svalbard

Join Natur&Foto for a spring workshop around Longyearbyen on Svalbard in late May and early June. By this time, most of the birds have returned, offering opportunities to photograph beautiful Arctic species such as the little auk, purple sandpiper, king eider, barnacle goose, pink-footed goose, sanderling and Svalbard rock ptarmigan, as well as both Svalbard reindeer and Arctic fox.

At this time of year, there is daylight around the clock. The finest light is at night, so we will turn our schedule around: Photograph in the late evening and at night – and sleep during the day. On this trip, we cooperate with a local operator who knows the best locations for these species – and who will, of course, keep watch for polar bears. It is reassuring to have someone keeping an eye out while you immerse yourself in your subjects. We cooperate with local guide Oddgeir Sagerup, who will look after us.

The little auks nest in large colonies high up in the scree in Bjørndalen, while most of the birds will be photographed in small pools along the road into Adventdalen. We place special emphasis on the Arctic specialists.
Get guidance on how to take the best possible bird photographs, including action, portraits, etc.

Among the mammals, we will focus on the Arctic fox, which at this time of year is changing from its winter coat to its summer coat. Svalbard reindeer are also grazing in many places and are remarkably trusting.

We will drive around on the few roads here and then walk short distances. The nature around Longyearbyen is also beautiful, and we will have opportunities for landscape photography.

Day 1 – May 30:

  • Departure from Oslo Airport to Longyearbyen. We will be picked up at the airport and driven to our accommodation. Check-in, overnight stay and a group dinner out. We will brief the participants about the trip. We plan to be out in the evening and at night for bird photography, as well as photographing Arctic foxes and reindeer.

Day 2 – June 1:

  • We sleep in after the night’s session. If the weather is cloudy, we can also photograph during the day. If it is sunny, we head out in the evening to photograph when the sun is at its lowest.

Day 3 – June 2:

  • We sleep in after the night’s session. If the weather is cloudy, we can also photograph during the day. If it is sunny, we head out in the evening to photograph when the sun is at its lowest.

Day 4 – June 3:

  • We rest after the night’s session and then head to the airport for our journey home.

Plans may change, as we always strive to get the best possible results from our trips.
